You could, if you want, argue that’s a good thing as they are picky about what they release or find suitable for release. Thus, yeah their track record leans towards their older content simply because they chose not to release much after that. They felt no rush to finish a game or source 2, they took their time. Once Valve became more of a publisher and distributor, as opposed to a game developer, their priorities changed. I gave you the most truthful answer, which is that their best track record so far leans more towards their older work rather than the newer. For what its worth I do think it was a learning experience for Valve. Both consumers and manufacturers kind of got screwed over on that one. The reason to bring up the steam machine is because it is an example of something Valve promoted then dropped because it did not do well. Games like Artifact and hardware initiatives like the steam machine are two examples of some flops. The subject was on the flop releases and so we have to discuss those objectively. This is a fair assessment and not meant as an insult. Thing is, once you are aware of the bias they can often be negated, which you have done since you admitted to it. Its not a dig at you by any means, everyone has a bias somewhere, myself included. A bias in this context is defined as an interference in rational thought. My implication was only with reference to what you your self stated, which is bias. You cannot have that attitude with this kind of stuff, especially when you start selling it in the first place. Steam OS? The developers just got bored and stopped working on it. Their steam machine project was left dead in the water, they could have saved it but they didnt. Many of their recent games are not “crafted to such a good level”. Replacing one extreme with another is not some how better in this context. Developers working on any project they want and then stopping when they want with no real solid management presence or plan is simply not healthy for a studio that produces products. One of Valve’s problems is they never had to worry about money from their Steam platform. Announcing something at developer events and then never following through is simply not a good business strategy much less one that builds good work ethic. Many independent studios still have to maintain a certain work ethic and plan. That’s not how it works nor is it applicable in all cases. With tools available for community modders to try their hand at making new VR content, the potential exists for great ideas to bubble up and spawn significant games. This is a bigger deal than just new weapon or enemy skins major titles like Counter-Strike, DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2, and Day of Defeat, all started their lives as mere mods.
